Book Layout

for the Solar Sinter

Exhibition publication for revolutionary solar-powered 3D printing technology creating glass from desert sand. Strategic layout combining varied page formats allows focus on technical facts alongside large-scale project imagery.

Project with Nikolaus Kayser

"The Solar Sinter" is a 3D printing machine developed by German designer Markus Kayser that creates glass objects from desert sand - powered by sunlight. His project was exhibited at the Royal College of Art's annual show in London in 2011. In collaboration with Nikolaus Kayser, the exhibition booklet was designed.

The layout is straightforward, but with a twist: the combination of different page formats allows the reader to focus on the facts while enjoying the large-scale images. "In August 2010 I took my first solar machine – the Sun-Cutter – to the Egyptian desert in a suitcase. This was a solar-powered, semi-automated low-tech laser cutter, that used the power of the sun to drive it and directly harnessed its rays through a glass ball lens to 'laser' cut 2D components using a cam-guided system..."
